Going to the complete opposite end of the spectrum, I grabbed a few random items out of the fridge and thought, “Huh, this would make a good smoothie!” Ah, the joys of fending for yourself.
Fortunately, was I right.
The ginger was an especially nice added touch; if you’re not a ginger person, you can back off a bit from this, but if you’re like me and LOVE a good hunk of ginger, you’re going to love its addition in this bright orange smoothie.
(Protip: To avoid stringy bits of ginger in your smoothie or elsewhere, freeze it! This also works well for grating ginger, as it comes out much less stringy.)
Again, I utilized cara cara oranges that I talked about yesterday. I have a metric fuckton, not even kidding. Throw in a couple carrots, an amazing source of beta carotene (which the body easily changes to vitamin A – a great way to get this vitamin without going straight to butter and eggs!); some apples because eh, you had them lying around; and a big ol’ hunk of ginger, and you’ve got yourself a rich, hearty, almost savory smoothie packed with goodness!
Yields: 2 servings
Ingredients
* two (2) large organic carrots, peeled and chopped
* two (2) cara cara oranges, peeled
* a splash or two of water
* one (1) pink lady apple (because eh)
* about 1″ of fresh ginger to taste*
*Not a huge fan of ginger? Add some 1/4″ at a time to your liking.
Method
1. Add the carrots and oranges to a blender (or Bullet) with a splash or two of water. Blend until well incorporated.
2. Throw in the apple, and blend again until well incorporated.
3. Chuck the whole chunk of ginger (or go in 1/4″s if that’s what you’re doing) and, yet again, blend until well incorporated. This part will take about 1.5 minutes as the ginger will need to really incorporate.
4. Pour into a glass, admire its orange hue, and enjoy!
I quite like ginger, so I’m going to grab this one too!
Ooh, good! It’s very different from the fruity one, but REALLY delicious at the same time.
Not sure when I’ll try it, but I’ll let you know when I do, and what I think.
